The Meaning of Christmas
Sometimes I marvel how God allows me to share in the true meaning of Christmas.
A week before Christmas I was delivering gift bags to shut-ins. I stopped at one of the houses but no one was home. I left a message on the answering machine to call when they were available. A few hours later a lady called, anxious for me to deliver the gift. I was going by her house later that evening and told her I could drop it off then. She gratefully accepted.
As I pulled up to the house I noticed there were no lights on. I looked around and saw the whole neighborhood was dark. There appeared to be a power outage.
When the door opened I was greeted by an elderly lady who told me the power had been out for an hour and she was hoping it would come back soon because it was so dark and cold.
When I showed her the gift bag a smile broke out and suddenly it didn’t seem quite so dark or quite so cold. It wasn’t so much the gift, but the light of Christ that shined on that dark cold night.
God would continue to show me the true meaning when my family and I held a Christmas party at the assisted living facility I taught Bible study at. Seeing the joy on their faces as we sang Christmas Carols and how appreciative they were was better than any gift under the tree.
As we departed we all agreed this was what Christmas is all about.
May we all look for the true meaning of Christmas not only on December 25th, but throughout the upcoming year.
I wish you all a Happy New Year may you let your light shine.
