The Last Laugh
After the last supper Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane, “And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.” Jesus wept; His disciples slept, oh, how Satan must have laughed.
Jesus was mocked, spit on and flogged. The crowds yelled, “Crucify Him” and Peter “The Rock” denied Him, oh, how Satan must have laughed.
A bloodied and beaten Jesus carried His cross to Golgotha where He would be crucified. He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities. Oh, how Satan must have laughed.
Hanging on the cross Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “My God, My God why have you forsaken me?” With a loud cry, He breathed His last. The Son of God was done, Satan thought he’d won. Oh, how Satan must have laughed.
But the story wasn’t over in fact it had just begun, because on the third day Jesus rose from the grave. He was dead, now alive! He rose in victory holding the keys of death and Hell. His punishment brought us peace, and by his wounds we are healed.
Death has lost its sting, Christ is our risen King. And, from where I’m kneeling it looks like to me that Jesus has had the last laugh.
