My Kind of Guy

Posted In: Blog

My March 9th blog titled Still Small Voice was about a gentleman from our church who resided in the assisted living facility where I led Bible study. My sons and I had been visiting and playing pool with this man for years. I received a call Friday morning that the still small voice called him home. The still small voice had been telling me this was coming. Still, you are never quite ready. This post is dedicated to him.

His name was Guy not Ralph. What a Guy! Small in stature but large in heart. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face even as he battled Parkinson’s disease. Everybody loved him. He had a love for playing pool and eating peanut M&M’s and whenever we visited him we made sure he had plenty of both.

As mentioned in the March 9th post Guy had fallen and would move to a nursing home for rehab. Last weekend when I visited him he was very confused. He thought he was back in assisted living. We spent much of the time looking for a pool table to have a quick game. Even though he was unable to stand, he still wanted to play. He knew the still small voice was calling him home and he wanted to beat me one more time before he left.

When I was released from prison Guy was one of the people I was looking forward to seeing. He never held my sin against me and often checked with my sons to see how I was doing. One day in prison I received a letter from Guy and I wan to share it with you so you would have a better idea of what he was like:

John,

My Game of pool hasn’t been the same since you, Jon and Nick were here. You are truly missed; my hopes are you will be back home and a frequent visitor once again. Life here at the Grand Victorian remains much the same.

I would like to hear from you. Hopefully your stay will be shorter than originally thought…Wish you well.

I am waiting for the day you walk through the door here at the Grand Victorian, ready for a game of pool.

Guy”
He will be dearly missed but I am confident he is in a far better place. I pray you all have the opportunity to have someone like this gentleman in your life. He was one of a kind. He was my kind of Guy.

P.S. I was in the middle of finishing this week’s post on Palm Sunday when I received the news about Guy. How quickly things change.
